Apotropaic

Apotropaic: Having the power to avert evil influences or bad luck

These marks have been found in many historic places in the UK, from medieval churches and houses, to barns, and caves. The symbol works by trapping evil spirits.  As they try to enter the building, they are caught up in the continuous circular motif and are unable to escape.

The marks were usually carved into stone or woodwork near a building’s entrance points, particularly doorways, windows and fireplaces, to protect inhabitants and visitors from witches and evil spirits. The origins of the symbol can be traced back into antiquity. They have been found in English buildings from the early medieval period, up into the 19th century. These pieces are based on a carving observed at Mottisfont House
